Redwood decking provides a literal and figurative bridging between other ground planes composed of slate and gravel. A water feature acts as a focal point for the patio and masks the noise from a nearby freeway. The multiple materials underfoot create different sounds when walked upon, further defining the individual spaces. Arriving upon the east side yard, one enters a green room - a lawn surrounded by a grove of large clumping bamboo. This garden won an “Award of Excellence” in the 2002/2003 Sunset Western Garden Design Awards competition.
